In April 2019, the Ararat Foundation completed the installation of a new drinking water supply system in the village of Kayan.
Below you can find videos, photos, and more information about this project.
In October 2019, we began (partially) funding a similar project in the border village of Berkaber — the construction of a 10 km underground water pipeline.
The work is well underway, and we are pleased to share more details about this important initiative.
Berkaber is a border village located just 800 meters from the border, in the Tavush region of Armenia. The village has 567 inhabitants, a school, and a kindergarten.
Despite facing numerous challenges — including an outdated water system, poor roads, and high unemployment — the residents continue to live there to help protect and guard the border.
The current drinking water system is in very poor condition. Water is transported through old metal pipes from a forest area near the village of Atsjarkut, about 10 km away from Berkaber.
These pipes are heavily rusted, and although part of the system was replaced in the past, the wrong materials (sewer pipes) were used, resulting in significant water loss and an unhygienic situation.
Within the village itself, there is no internal water distribution system — there are no pipelines connected to the residents’ homes. Instead, villagers collect water from public taps installed throughout the community.
It is essential to replace the entire 10 km pipeline using polyethylene pipes, which are far more durable.
Additionally, three new public water taps will be installed, bringing the total number of water collection points to eight.
The estimated cost for this project is AMD 10 million (EUR 20,000), which covers the complete replacement of the pipeline and the installation of three new water taps.
Initially, the Ararat Foundation was unable to finance this project due to limited funds.
However, thanks to new developments, we were able to participate after all.
The Armenian government, in cooperation with the local community, had already dug a trench between Atsjarkut and Berkaber for field irrigation purposes.
This trench can also be used to install the new drinking water pipeline, bringing clean water from Atsjarkut to Berkaber — effectively solving the village’s water supply problem.
The Ararat Foundation has started financing the installation of the drinking water system, with a total required budget of €5,000.
You can view the full budget here: Berkaber Budget.
Our representatives visited the village to review the work and plans.
Since the end of October 2019, intensive work has been taking place in Berkaber on this major project!
