Project 2020: Water Supply for Tsaghkavan

In 2018 and 2019, the Ararat Foundation carried out humanitarian projects in the border villages of Kajan and Berkaber.
In Kajan, the roof of a five-story apartment building was completely renovated and a new water supply system was installed.
In Berkaber, a 10 km long water pipeline was constructed.
Videos, photos, and more information about these projects can be found below.

For 2020, we have launched a new project. Once again, our goal is to build a reliable water supply system to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water.
This year, the project focuses on the village of Tsaghkavan, located in the Tavush region of Armenia.
Tsaghkavan lies in a border area that frequently experiences shootings and security issues. The village is home to about 630 residents, including 110 schoolchildren and 35 kindergarten children.

During our visit to the village, the mayor explained the severe problems with the water supply.
The existing system was built in 1968 and has become unusable after decades of poor maintenance. The pipelines are rusted and deteriorated.
A few years ago, local residents managed to repair about 700 meters of the pipeline. However, the pipes used were made of materials that made the water unsafe for consumption and harmful to human health.

The village has two water reservoirs, but both are in poor condition and urgently need renovation.
Our plan is to bring fresh water from two nearby natural springs and build a new water supply system consisting of three main sections (pipelines):

  • The first pipeline will transport water from the springs to the reservoir.
  • The other two pipelines will deliver the water from the reservoir to the two separate parts of the village (as the village was divided into two by a landslide).

The Ararat Foundation has requested specialists in Armenia to prepare a detailed budget.
The total cost of this project is estimated at €14,000.

Ararat Foundation Successfully Completes Its First 2020 Project: “Water Supply for Tsaghkavan”

The Ararat Foundation has successfully completed its first project of 2020, “Water Supply for Tsaghkavan.”
The work took approximately one month to complete. The location presented significant challenges — with forests, mountains, hills, and lowlands — which meant that part of the work had to be done manually rather than by machinery.

The old, rusted, and largely unusable 1,600-meter pipeline was completely replaced.
This deteriorated system had caused severe water loss. Thanks to the new pipeline, water loss has been drastically reduced, and the residents of the village now have access to safe drinking water.

In addition, we successfully renovated two large water reservoirs.
The surrounding area was cleaned, bushes and vegetation were removed, and the reservoirs were secured with protective fencing.

This project was largely funded by the Grigoryan family from the United States.
The residents of Tsaghkavan and the Ararat Foundation express their heartfelt gratitude to the Grigoryan family for their generous support.
